* The selection of web hosting companies to be featured here is necessarily subjective, but it is based on a review of hosting forums, webmaster opinions, industry awards, testimonials, and an interview with each.  The evaluation pages on each web hosting company are honest evaluations that present  weaknesses as well as strengths.  These are my opinions, you are advised to check out each host yourself.  We have provided links to pertinent forums on the web hosting companies description pages.  This author has personally dealt only with An Hosting and Hostmonster, and thus we can only personally attest to the service of these two web hosting companies.  For the rest of the web hosts we have relied on the host's own information and the opinions of other webmasters.  When reading reviews and ratings of web hosting companies on affiliate sites (sites with hosting advertisements on them), keep in mind that the reviews or ratings may be nothing more than advertisements trying to convince you to purchase hosting rather than true evaluations.   It also has been reported that "industrial awards" can be purchased, which compromises their effectiveness in recognizing truly outstanding service.  The web is an unregulated jungle in which everything should be treated with caution and skepticism.

Although we present much of the data you need to find a good  web hosting company, the information provided is based on published data.  One factor seldom published is the bandwidth (bits per second) of their connection(s) to the internet and the excess bandwidth maintained to insure that their connection to the net is seldom over subscribed.  Internet traffic varies greatly with time of day and day of the week.  Over subscription of a web hosting company’s connection to the web during high traffic times slows the transfer of data for everyone using that connection.  When a web hosting company offers almost unlimited resources at a very low price (like most of the plans above) over selling and putting too many websites on each shared server is encouraged to keep costs down.  This causes web pages to transfer slowly as well.  Also, technical service suffers since knowledgeable technicians don't come cheaply.  Many well managed hosting companies still do a very acceptable job of providing an amazing amount of resources at a very low price without compromising their technical service.  The two web hosting companies we have dealt with, An Hosting and Hostmonster, in our experience, are examples.
